3 simple steps to panning like a pro
Set manual focus
For subjects whose position you can predict, such as cars on a track, you’ll get the best results
by setting manual focus and pre-focusing on the point where you’ll be shooting the subject. For erratically moving subjects you’ll need to set predictive focusing.
Check your speed
With the camera set to shutter priority mode, set a shutter speed that’s appropriate to the pace of the subject you’re shooting. For fast-moving subjects such as cars, start at around 1/250 sec. Reduce this for slower subjects.
Keep it smooth
The best panning technique is to keep your movement as smooth as possible. Start your pan well before you begin shooting, and even more important, continue tracking the subject well after you’ve finished taking your shots, to eliminate jerky movement.
